Can I cancel my commercial order?
  • Orders that have been paid in full or secured with a minimum deposit are non-refundable.
  • Subsequently, orders that have been placed must be shipped in a timely manner.  Failure to take an order once ready to ship may result in higher freight chargers required for refrigeration shipments or further shipping delays due to heat
  • Orders held for more than 60 days beyond invoiced ship date may result in loss of deposit or pre-paid balance due to the cost of maintaining plants.
  • All Sales Are Final

Can I Modify my commercial order?
  • Once propagation has occurred an order cannot be modified.  Any exceptions are solely at the discretion of GLH.

Are GLH's Plants Certified Disease Free?
  • No, GLH does not certify that it's planting stock is disease free.
  • Great Lakes Hops strives to provide the cleanest planting stock of Hop plants available to commercial hop farmers. We are a MDARD licensed and inspected plant nursery.
  • We do not claim our planting stock is certified or guaranteed virus-free, even though we make every attempt to propagate from VF registered mother stock obtained directly from the NCP program when available; due to the rapid rate hops re-acquire viruses.
  • Please review our Terms & Policies page.

Why did my purchase appear as a different company on my bank or credit card statement?
  • Great Lakes Hops is a division of Dutch Touch Growers Inc.
  • Charges may appear on credit card or bank statements as "SQ*DUTCH TOUCH GRO" or something similar.
  • If you have any questions regarding what was billed on your card please contact us for clarification prior to filing a dispute.

Do you ship to Canada/ Internationally?
  • Due to very high border fees for shipping live hops into Canada, we are only able to ship large bulk orders of approximately 5,000 plants or more.  For those looking to purchase small orders, we recommend looking for growers associations in your area, such as the Ontario Hop Growers Association to possibly pool orders together.  International customers must source their own freight and customs brokerage firm.
  • We currently do not ship to other countries due to stringent customs regulations on live plant material. Live plants also do not survive the longer shipment times. There are also several US states we cannot ship to.  Please review our Shipping Details.

Why buy plants instead of rhizomes?
  • Rhizomes are pieces of plant root with a node capable of growing a plant.  There is no guarantee that a rhizome will grow, if it is laden with disease, or will even be available when you'r ready to plant.  We supply already grown plants instead of rhizomes, which gives the grower a superior product that often matures a year or more earlier than a rhizome would.  This also allows us to visually inspect them before shipment to ensure we're sending healthy plants capable of producing great hops.

A variety I want is out of stock, when will it be available again?
  • Some varieties, due to higher demand or slower propagation cycles are not available at certain times. We return these to in-stock items when we are confident they are mature enough for planting.  We propagate year-round in an effort to fill demand, so check back often. If you're looking for commercial quantities, pre-ordering is available  Varieties labeled "Discontinued" will be leaving the GLH propagation assortment as soon as in-stock quantities are sold through and will not be available for retail or commercial purchases moving forward.

I just ordered in-stock hops plants and I'm super excited to get them. When will they arrive?
  • To provide our customers with the highest quality plants, we ship out orders in batches at the beginning of each week.  This generally prevents plants from sitting in a truck or warehouse over the weekend, and allows us to provide the highest quality plants possible.  When processed, you should receive a tracking number via Paypal for your shipment.  Please see our Shipping Details, and Terms and Policies for more information.

I just ordered and submitted my payment to Paypal. Did you get the order?
  • Yes!  We use paypal for all of our order processing and invoicing.  Your confirmation from paypal is all you need.  If you didn't get an email from paypal, be sure to check your email address on file with paypal if you have an account.  When we ship your order, you will receive a shipping confirmation email from paypal with tracking information.

I am interested in x number of plants for a hop yard, how do I get commercial pricing?
  • Large commercial orders are priced based on order size, and variety.  Each order is handled and quoted on an individual basis.  Pre-orders for spring and fall planting seasons require a 20% down, non-refundable reserve fee that will be applied toward the final invoice balance. All outstanding balances must be paid in full prior to shipment. Feel free to contact us for more details on availability dates, specific pricing questions, or qualifications.

It is too cold/ freezing outside where I live, can I order now and have you hold my order?
  • We currently do not accept pre-orders for retail quantities.  All online retail orders are shipped within 10 days of the order being placed year-round.  Please do not order until you are ready to receive your plants.  If you are a hop yard looking to pre-order commercial quantities, please contact us.

I ordered several varieties in the spring. Some are growing, and some are not.  Are they dead?
  • Each variety takes a different amount of time to break out of dormancy in the spring.  While some may begin to throw up shoots soon after planting, some varieties can take 6 to 8 weeks before they initiate budding.  Be careful not to over water and potentially rot these plants. Give them time and they should grow.

It is still cold outside, what should I do with my hops plants?
  • Leave them right in the bags- add a bit of moistened (but not wet) potting soil to the rice hulls in the bag (they don't hold moisture well) - shake to mix the soil with the hulls- (a 50/50 blend is good) - poke some holes in the bag's bottom and place somewhere cold (like your garage) Check every couple of weeks for moisture and move to a colder place if you see them starting to sprout. You will see white roots begin to grow - that's OK- you just don't want the tops to start growing rapidly. Any temps over 42 degrees will start bine growth. (some early growth is nothing to worry about- you can simply pinch those tips and new ones will form from deeper in the crown.)

What is a crown?
  • Fully mature hop plants that have produced cones and have undergone crown bud formation. Crowns are entering dormancy, or are fully dormant with heavy budding and root formation. These are typically a 4 month to 1 year old plant. Since they are dormant, they are favored for Fall plantings & carry over into early Spring plantings. As they begin to sprout new growth and are no longer dormant, they are no longer referred to as crowns, but as a growing field-grade plant.

Some hops are field grade, some aren't- what is the difference?
  • Field grade plants are grown to s specific uniform size, ideal for row planting.  Field grade are generally at least 4 months old with a well established root system. Varieties not marked as field grade are generally picked from older stock and are generally larger, more mature plants of varying size.  As we rotate stock, we make available the types of stock that we currently have for each variety.

I live in  ____, what hops should I buy for my climate?
  • Hop plant livelihood can vary based on hours of daylight and temperature.  Many growers and beer enthusiasts use homebrewtalk.com as a great forum to get answers to specific growing questions. Please check their forums, or other online articles to figure out what hop plants would work the best for your location.  We are working hard to add information to our hop plant profile pages as we come across information.

I like _____ beer, what hops go good in that?
  • The possible combination of hops and beers is extremely vast. There are many online resources available such as Beer Advocate with information on pairing hops with beer styles, and if you're serious about your craft, due diligence is required to research recipes for styles, aromas, and bitterness that fit your palate.
